About Me - Self Portrait

As a child I can remember both my Dad, and at least two of my uncles, being keen photographers, with my uncle developing his own prints from negatives using an old oven as a make shift darkroom – ingenious! One of my uncles’ images, a black and white of a full moon with the silhouette of a cat in front of it seemed amazing to me then and reminds me that there was creativity before photoshop :-).

So that’s how my interest in photography started and eventually I was given my own little camera for taking snaps on holidays but it wasn’t until I was given my Dad’s Minolta SLR that I really started to enjoy the process of capturing an image and appreciating the results.

In 2004 I bought my first digital camera (Minolta Dimage Z1) and then in 2008 my first DSLR a Nikon D80. Fast forward to 2016 and that’s when I purchased my next Nikon (D7100) and the one that I am still using today. IBAC – Images By Andrew Cooke – is a collection of photographic images that I have built up since moving to the digital format.

Portraiture, why do I enjoy making a portrait? In the book of Genesis, the first book in the bible, I read that God made each of us in His image which confers on each person a value, a uniqueness, a beauty and a potential that a portrait allows us the time to explore. Portraiture for me is an opportunity to try to reflect something of the unique qualities of the person in front of the camera.

I hope that you enjoy these images as much as I have enjoyed creating them.
